Month-by-Month Guide
January
Winter settles in with cool days and genuinely cold nights. You'll find the city relatively quiet tourism-wise, with locals bundled up and the surrounding mountains often snow-capped. The moderate rainfall means you might encounter some drizzly days, though it's nothing too disruptive.
February
Still winter, though you'll notice the days starting to warm slightly. This is actually when rainfall picks up considerably—the wettest stretch of the year is beginning. Mornings can be quite cold, but afternoons become more tolerable as the month progresses.
March
Spring arrives with noticeably warmer temperatures and the city starts coming alive with greenery. That said, this is one of the wetter months, so you'll want to pack accordingly. The temperature swings between day and night are still significant—mornings can be chilly while afternoons feel quite pleasant.
April
This is peak spring with comfortable temperatures that make exploring the city a pleasure. It's also the wettest month of the year, so expect regular rain showers—though they tend to pass quickly. The surrounding valleys are at their greenest, and fruit trees are typically in bloom.
May
Late spring brings genuinely warm weather, and you'll start to see why summer can be intense here. Rainfall drops off significantly from April, making this an excellent month for outdoor activities. The heat is building but remains manageable, especially in the mornings and evenings.
June
Summer heat arrives in full force, with temperatures regularly hitting the low 90s Fahrenheit. The upside is that rain becomes rare—you'll get plenty of sunshine and clear skies. This is when you'll see locals adjusting their schedules to avoid the midday heat.
July
The hottest month of the year, and it shows—temperatures push close to 100°F on many days. Rain is virtually nonexistent, which is good for planning but means the city can feel dusty. Early mornings and late evenings are your best bet for comfortable outdoor exploration.
August
Still intensely hot, though fractionally cooler than July. You'll get essentially zero rainfall—it's bone dry. The heat can be exhausting for travelers not accustomed to continental summer temperatures, but air-conditioned museums and indoor attractions become quite appealing.
September
Early autumn brings welcome relief from the summer heat, with temperatures dropping to much more comfortable levels. Rain remains rare, giving you excellent weather for sightseeing. This is actually one of the best months to visit—warm days, cool nights, and clear skies.
October
Autumn settles in properly with mild, pleasant temperatures that make walking around the city comfortable throughout the day. You might encounter occasional light rain, but nothing significant. The surrounding mountains start showing autumn colors, and the air becomes noticeably crisper.
November
The transition to winter becomes obvious as temperatures drop and rainfall increases somewhat. Days can still be pleasant, but you'll definitely need warmer layers for evenings. Tourist numbers thin out considerably, giving you a more local experience of the city.
December
Winter arrives with cold temperatures, especially at night when it can drop to freezing. The moderate rainfall means you'll likely see some wet, gray days. The city takes on a quieter atmosphere, and you'll find locals gathered in teahouses escaping the chill.
