Dushanbe Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Tajikistan offers various visa options depending on nationality. The country has implemented an e-visa system that covers most travelers, though some nationalities still enjoy visa-free access or require traditional visa applications.
Citizens of select countries can enter Tajikistan without a visa for tourism or business purposes
Primarily CIS countries enjoy visa-free access. Duration varies by bilateral agreement. Registration with local authorities may still be required for stays exceeding 30 days. Always verify current status as agreements can change.
Most international travelers can obtain an e-visa online before arrival, including citizens of the US, UK, EU countries, Canada, Australia, and many others
Cost: Approximately $50-85 USD for tourist e-visa (single-entry), varies by visa type and processing speed
E-visa must be printed and presented at immigration. Ensure all information matches your passport exactly. The e-visa is valid for entry within 90 days of issuance. Some travelers report being asked for invitation letters or hotel confirmations, though not officially required.
Limited availability for certain nationalities at Dushanbe International Airport
Visa on arrival service is inconsistent and may not be available to all travelers. Long wait times possible. Requirements may include invitation letter and hotel confirmations. Apply for e-visa in advance to avoid complications.
Some nationalities must apply through Tajikistan embassy or consulate
Required for countries not covered by e-visa system. May require Letter of Invitation (LOI) from Tajik sponsor or tour company. Business visas typically require LOI from Tajik company or organization.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Dushanbe International Airport, travelers proceed through immigration control, baggage claim, and customs. The process is generally orderly but can be time-consuming, especially during peak arrival times. Having all documents organized and readily accessible will expedite the process.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Tajikistan customs regulations are designed to control the import and export of goods, currency, and prohibited items. Travelers should familiarize themselves with allowances and restrictions to avoid penalties, delays, or confiscation of goods.
Prohibited Items
- Narcotics and illegal drugs - Tajikistan has extremely strict drug laws with severe penalties including lengthy imprisonment
- Weapons and ammunition - Including firearms, explosives, and military equipment without proper permits
- Pornographic materials - Including magazines, videos, and digital content
- Materials deemed subversive or against national security - Political or religious materials that could be considered extremist
- Counterfeit currency and goods - Fake money, pirated media, and counterfeit branded products
- Endangered species products - Items made from protected animals or plants without CITES permits
- Certain foods - Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products from certain countries (check current restrictions)
- Psychotropic substances - Even some medications containing controlled substances require special permission
Restricted Items
- Medications - Prescription medications should be in original containers with doctor's prescription. Medications containing controlled substances require special permits from Tajikistan health authorities
- Drones and radio equipment - May require special permits from relevant authorities. Register expensive electronic equipment to avoid duty on exit
- Cultural artifacts and antiques - Export of items of cultural or historical significance is strictly controlled and requires permits from Ministry of Culture
- Large amounts of cash - While not prohibited, amounts over $3,000 USD must be declared and source may be questioned
- Professional photography/video equipment - May be questioned regarding purpose; journalists require special accreditation
- Religious materials - Large quantities of religious literature may be restricted; small amounts for personal use generally acceptable
- Satellite phones - May require registration or permits; check current regulations before bringing
Health Requirements
Health requirements for entering Tajikistan are relatively minimal for most travelers, though certain vaccinations are recommended for health protection rather than entry. Travelers should verify current requirements, particularly regarding COVID-19 or other emerging health concerns.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Required only if arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries. Certificate must be presented at immigration if applicable.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date on routine vaccines including MMR, DTP, polio, and seasonal influenza
- Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to potential exposure through food and water
- Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have medical procedures, get tattoos, or have intimate contact
- Typhoid - Recommended, especially for travelers visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas
- Rabies - Consider for travelers with extensive outdoor activities, working with animals, or staying for extended periods
- Tuberculosis - Consider for travelers who will have close contact with local population or work in healthcare settings
- Japanese Encephalitis - May be considered for travelers spending extensive time in rural areas during transmission season
Health Insurance
Travel health insurance is strongly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Medical facilities in Tajikistan are limited, especially outside Dushanbe, and serious medical issues may require evacuation to better-equipped facilities in neighboring countries or Europe. Ensure your insurance covers medical evacuation, as this can be extremely expensive. Many providers in Tajikistan require cash payment upfront, so insurance should cover reimbursement. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport (included in parent's passport generally not accepted for international travel). If a child is traveling with only one parent or with neither parent, a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) is strongly recommended and may be required. The letter should include travel dates, destinations, and accompanying adult's information. Birth certificates may be requested to prove relationship. Minors require the same visa as adults.
Pets entering Tajikistan require: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days before travel but not more than 12 months), international veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, microchip for identification (recommended), and import permit from Tajikistan veterinary authorities (may be required). Some airlines have additional restrictions. Check with your airline and Tajikistan veterinary service well in advance. Be aware that pet-friendly accommodations are limited in Dushanbe.
Tourist visas can sometimes be extended through OVIR (Office of Visas and Registration) in Dushanbe, though approval is not guaranteed. Extensions typically require: valid reason for extension, proof of sufficient funds, hotel registration or invitation letter, passport photos, and application fee. Apply at least one week before current visa expires. For stays longer than 30 days, registration with OVIR is mandatory. For extended stays beyond tourist visa, consider applying for business visa, student visa, or work permit through appropriate Tajik sponsor organization. Overstaying a visa results in fines and potential entry bans.
Business visa requires invitation letter from registered Tajik company or organization. The invitation must be approved by Tajikistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Business e-visas are available for eligible nationalities. Business travelers should carry: business visa, invitation letter, company registration documents, letter from home company explaining purpose of visit, and business cards. Multiple-entry business visas available for frequent visitors.
Journalists and media workers require special accreditation from Tajikistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in addition to visa. Professional camera equipment may be questioned at customs. Apply for accreditation well in advance through Tajikistan embassy in your country. Unauthorized journalism activities can result in detention and deportation.
Travel to Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) and certain border regions requires special GBAO permit in addition to visa. Permits can be obtained online during e-visa application (select GBAO option) or through OVIR in Dushanbe. Some remote areas near Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan borders may have additional restrictions. Military installations and border zones are strictly off-limits. Carry passport and permits at all times when traveling outside Dushanbe.
Tajikistan does not recognize dual nationality for its citizens. If you hold Tajik citizenship plus another nationality, you must enter and exit Tajikistan on your Tajik passport. Former Tajik citizens who have renounced citizenship should carry proof of renunciation to avoid complications. Consult Tajikistan embassy if you have questions about dual nationality status.
